 Arm swing during walking and running plays an important role in balance and energy expenditure in humans. Over the course of human evolutionary history arms have gotten shorter overall, and the relative sizes of the different arm segments have changed as well. In the Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics Lab we investigate the mechanics, muscle physiology, and energetics of arm swing to answer questions about how walking and running shaped the evolution of the arm from our last common ancestor with chimpanzees to modern humans.
